Invisible Cities is a novel by Italo Calvino, originally published in Italy in 1972. The author describes 55 different fictional cities sorted into eleven thematic groups. As part of an Advanced Typography class assignment, I was instructed to select a handful of my favorite stories. From there I created a small hand-bound book.
The following photographs show the completed book. Everything from the page size and margins, to the font choice and layout, was all carefully considered. At the end of the book I included a Colophon explaining the book design in detail. The entire book is laid out in several versions of Bodoni, including the ornamental elements.
